Having a bathroom remodel go wrong and end up far from what you intended isn’t like getting a bad haircut. You may have to deal with the immediate consequences of that botched new hairstyle or making the wrong choice for how you want to look—but the haircut we’ll grow out, and in a few months you can start over. A bad bathroom remodel is permanent, at least unless you schedule a second remodeling. And who wants to have to do that?
We have many years of experience with handling bathroom remodels in Brentwood, CA, and throughout the Los Angeles Area. We’ve heard many horror stories from people who didn’t think through their remodel, and we want to share with you a few things many homeowners wish they had known or considered before they went ahead with revamping a bathroom.

Because Southern California experiences less extreme seasons during the year, we don’t have the same limitations on when it’s best to have specific home constructions and home remodeling in Beverly Hills, CA or other towns done. Trying to get a major construction project completed “before the winter snows start” is obviously not something we need to worry about!
However, there are still seasonal guidelines that can help you focus on your future plans for remodeling. You may not have a major remodel in mind right at the moment, but looking forward over the next year you can get a general idea of when is best to have specific jobs done. We’re going to go over the seasons below and discuss remodeling options, which can help give you ideas for future home improvements.

There are few places in the country with more guest houses than Southern California. An attractive additional house on your property can significantly enhance the property value, and of course has numerous practical functions as well—especially if you have a large extended family and frequent visitors.
And just because it’s called a “guest house” doesn’t mean it can’t have numerous uses when you don’t have guests. You can make the guest room into a home office—great if you’re planning to do more work-from-home in the future—a workout/exercise room, a children’s play area, a library/reading room, a home theater, a practice space for people who play instruments, an art studio, a craft space, extra storage… there’s so much a guest house can do for you.
But you’ll need the right guest house design and construction. Here are some ideas for guest house construction to ensure you get the most from this addition to your living space.

Kitchens come in all sizes, and the size of the rest of the house doesn’t always dictate if the kitchen is large or small. Getting the most out of a small kitchen is a big test of design concepts. But what about the medium-sized kitchen? You have more options for remodeling a standard kitchen, and the increase in options can often be the problem. Where to invest? Enlarge or not enlarge?
You may already have goals in mind for a mid-sized kitchen remodel, such as to help people in your home with mobility issues or to conserve water. We’d like to show you some ideas for the medium-sized kitchen remodel to consider that can apply to many different goals—and they’ll probably help you mold your goals toward the ideal outcome you didn’t even realize was possible.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, an ADU is an abbreviation of the term Accessory Dwelling Unit. These are typically second (or third, as permitted in some areas) housing units on a residential property. So, what does this mean? Well … your garage, or your backyard could be a well of untapped income. Every city is going to have its own rules, and since we are located in Los Angeles County, we can only speak to what we see going on here. Always check with your local city housing department to see what the rules are where you live.
So, does that mean you have to live in the main house? Actually, many Angelinos are even renting out their main home and settling into the ADU for themselves. For those wading into the river of retirement, whose children are no longer in the home, or who just don’t need that much space (ADUs are typically between 400–1,200 sq. ft), living in the second or third unit suits their needs just fine. Plus, you get to enjoy the brand newness of it all.

You have numerous options for room additions to expand out the living, working, and recreational space of your current house. But a problem many homeowners encounter is they don’t have the exterior space available for these additions. There are other choices that don’t increase the footprint of your house, however. One of them is the dormer addition.
A dormer, for people who don’t know this architectural term, is a window that projects from a sloping roof. The dormer has its own roof, which can be style in various way to either match the home or create an interesting counterpoint to it. Some homeowners add dormers almost strictly for the way they can enhance or change the style of the front of the house, or increase the house’s size, essentially giving the house another “eye.” (There’s also a false dormer, a window that doesn’t look in on anything. This isn’t a current popular trend and is often associated with poor design choices.)

If you’re on this page, it’s because you know the home project you have in mind is not one you should attempt as a DIY project. That’s smart thinking at the start. Room additions, room expansions, converting the function of a space, major remodeling, and full house construction are all jobs where the complexity requires planning and the work of different experts, such as electricians, plumbers, architects, designers, etc.
But once you decide to hire professional contractors to handle the project, you have another choice to make. Do you hire a general contractor? Or should you hire subcontractors yourself? The second route may sound less expensive, but there is more to consider.
